Two of the biggest casino operators have reached tentative labor agreements with a Las Vegas union, reducing the impact of a potential strike on a variety of association meetings scheduled this month.
The deals between Culinary Workers Union Local 226, MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, reached Friday and Saturday, eliminate the strike threat from more than half of the union's 50,000 members, according to the Associated Press. https://cnb.cx/2kNXttL
Members of the union, who work in 34 resort destinations in the city, had voted May 22 to authorize a strike this month. They are seeking better pay but also greater protections from sexual harassment by hotels guests, and losing jobs to automation.
One association whose meeting still could be affected is AVIXA. InfoComm 2018 starts Wednesday at the Las Vegas Convention Center with some sessions at the nearby Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Westgate Resorts had not reached agreement with the union yet as of this morning.
An AVIXA spokesman told CEO Update in an email last week that it doesn't anticipate a work stoppage or disruption of service at any of the hotels where its members are staying, including the Westgate.
The union says it also still is negotiating with 14 other Las Vegas casinos and resorts, according to KLAS-TV. Those include Tropicana, the Stratosphere, Treasure Island and the Four Seasons on the Strip, and Binions, Fremont, El Cortez, Downtown Grand, the Plaza, and the Golden Nugget in Downtown Las Vegas.
